Impact

The Camp Lejeune water crisis was caused by toxic chemicals entering groundwater that supplied the base’s drinking-water systems. Sources included leaking underground storage tanks, industrial spills, waste-disposal sites and an off-base dry-cleaning business. The contamination began in the early 1950s, with VA recognizing an exposure period from August 1, 1953, through December 31, 1987. (ATSDR)

Veterans, Reservists and National Guard members who served at Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River for at least 30 cumulative days during that period may qualify for certain VA disability or health-care benefits. Family members who lived there, including children exposed before birth, may also qualify for certain health-care benefits. Eligibility depends on service or residency records, medical conditions and other VA requirements. (Veterans Affairs)
